Did you know that the average life expectancy of Americans is 78.7 years? We are living longer due to better health habits such as eating healthy and not smoking. Keeping your weight within a heathy range is key to not only living longer but also being able to enjoy your life, as you age. Obesity is defined by your BMI, body mass index. There are lots of charts available on the internet to determine if you are clinically obese. Regardless of your weight, know this, fat around the midsection is one of the biggest indicators of your health. Excess visceral fat can cause serious health problems. There are a few changes you can make to help with this. Exercising for a minimum of 30 minutes each day will help to burn visceral fat. Simple, small changes in your diet help as well. Diets don’t work. Especially ones that limit you to certain foods. I’ve seen many a woman ready to chew her arm off on a no carb diet. Repeat after me, diet is a four letter word. Lifestyle changes work. Things that allow you to eat all foods and enjoy life. In the end, don’t be too hard on yourself, having some body fat is perfectly healthy and normal. Here are a few things that I do to maintain a healthy weight. I practice intermittent fasting. That’s where you limit your eating to 8 hours in one day, not eating for the other 16. This isn’t so hard when you consider that you are sleeping for six or eight of that. This is good to do every other day. I also do cellular cleansing once or twice a month. Both of these methods trick the body into burning fat, at times 1300% faster. I’ll talk more both of these methods, next week. The other thing I do is have healthy, high protein snacks available for in-between meals. Snacks that are high in protein are great because they make you feel full. I find that having snacks on hand really prevents me from making bad choices when I hungry. I’ll give you lots of ideas from things right out of your fridge to products that have been designed to be incorporated into a busy life. My new favorite snack is collagen bone broth. It’s great in-between meals to keep you from getting hangry! It’s good for your skin, helping to prevent wrinkles, fine lines and thinner skin and also helps with building and maintaining cartilage. This is essential as we age. Over time, the cartilage that cushions joints become thinner and loses its resilience. This results in joint pain and reduced range of motion. I like to put chopped scallions and mushrooms in the broth to make it more hearty. In the next few weeks I’m going to focus on small, simple things you can do to improve your health. I had several clients that were in nursing homes over the years. One thing I noticed is that the quality of your extended life is directly related to the habits, good and bad that you had while you were younger. Regardless of choices that you have made, it’s never to late to start making better ones! I have worked with a nutrition company for years and have helped many people lose weight.
